Tesla Updates Model S and Model X: Price Increased by $5,000 Across All Variants

Tesla has introduced updates to its flagship models, the Model S sedan and Model X SUV, focusing on exterior refinements, interior enhancements, and slight improvements in range. In addition, prices for all variants have been raised by $5,000.
New Colors and Design Tweaks
The most noticeable change in the updated models is the introduction of Frost Blue metallic paint, priced as an optional extra at $2,500. This new color uses nano-scale metallic particles to create a gradient effect under varying lighting conditions. Alongside Frost Blue, Tesla continues to offer five classic colors, including gray (standard and free) and pearl white, with optional paint prices ranging between $1,500 and $2,500.
Regarding wheels, the Model S now comes standard with 19-inch Magnetite rims designed to enhance aerodynamics, contributing to improved range. Customers can opt for 21-inch Velarium wheels for $4,500, which reduces the EPA-rated range to 380 miles—2 miles less than the outgoing 21-inch wheels.
The Model X offers 20-inch Perihelix wheels as standard, while the 22-inch Machina rims are exclusive to the Performance version.
Functional exterior upgrades focus on the front end. Blacked-out brand badges and grille elements create a cohesive visual theme. The Model S Plaid version also features an updated front bumper design aimed at improving high-speed stability. Additionally, a new camera integrated into the front bumper expands forward visibility, enhancing ADAS system capabilities for detecting complex road conditions such as potholes.
Improved Quietness and Cabin Atmosphere
The updated interiors continue Tesla's minimalist design approach with enhancements focused on user experience. A dynamic ambient lighting system is a standout new feature—when the vehicle is unlocked, the dashboard and door panels display a custom light animation. The ambient lighting also syncs with music, creating a tech-forward cabin atmosphere. Noise insulation has been upgraded with enhanced materials and optimized active noise cancellation, significantly reducing wind and road noise for a quieter cabin experience.
In terms of practicality, the Model X’s third-row passenger space and storage areas have been expanded, although exact dimensions remain undisclosed. Tesla emphasizes improved everyday usability. The rear center armrest now integrates storage compartments and wireless charging pads, adding convenience for rear passengers. The steering wheel continues to offer both round and Yoke options, while the 17-inch central touchscreen remains unchanged in design and functionality.
Range and Intelligent Features Enhanced
Range improvements are modest. The Model S Dual Motor Long Range version now achieves an EPA-estimated range of 410 miles, up from 402 miles. Based on China's CLTC cycle (1.36x EPA), this equates to approximately 900 km. The Model S Plaid version maintains an EPA-rated range of 368 miles, while the Model X’s updated range figures are not specified but are expected to remain close to previous levels. Powertrain specifications remain unchanged, with the dual-motor and tri-motor Plaid versions retaining their acceleration performance.
Chassis upgrades include new suspension bushings and structural optimizations, which Tesla claims improve ride quality. Specific handling metrics were not disclosed. Adaptive air suspension continues as standard, offering dynamic height and damping adjustments.
Driver-assist hardware sees notable enhancements, with the new front bumper camera improving Autopilot’s ability to recognize road conditions and obstacles with greater precision. Tesla's ‘Smart Summon’ feature has also been refined for better parking and path planning accuracy. Additionally, the headlights have been upgraded to adaptive high beams, automatically adjusting the light beam based on the position of oncoming vehicles to enhance nighttime driving safety.
Price Increase Across All Variants
With the $5,000 price increase, the Model S Dual Motor Long Range version now starts at $84,990, while the Plaid version is priced at $99,990. The Model X Dual Motor Long Range version starts at $89,990, and the Plaid version is priced at $104,990. Notably, the Model S Plaid version now exceeds the $100,000 mark, reflecting a 5% increase over the previous model.
Limited Presence in the Chinese Market
In China, Tesla’s Model S and Model X have struggled to gain significant traction. Tesla has not disclosed 2024 sales figures for these models in the Chinese market, but projections suggest combined sales of fewer than 2,000 units, accounting for just 0.3% of Tesla’s total sales in China (657,000 units). Moreover, Tesla China’s website no longer offers the option to order new Model S or Model X vehicles directly. Customers can only choose from existing inventory or pre-owned vehicles.
High pricing due to import tariffs and the competitive local EV market are key factors limiting their appeal. Retail prices for the Model S and Model X in China range from approximately $75,990 to $92,390, making them significantly more expensive compared to local competitors offering more comprehensive features.
